As a disciplined person, a sport psychologist should undertake a scientific study of people and their behavior in sports. He can involve such topics as personality, motivation, mental toughness, managing emotions (such as anger or anxiety), team dynamics, leadership and increase of confidence. In essence, the field is concerned with the psychological, mental components or determinants of performance as well as the psychological effects in sport. People think of sport psychologists as using imaginary or relaxation methods or techniques or they may equate it with hypnotherapy. Professional athletes and many teams realize that the value of sports psychology certainly improves the athletes and is an important study for the nation.- the more perfect the psychological study the better the athletes of that national. It is good when working with amateur and collegiate athlete. Many sports psychologists will have to look in to major tasks like: - Assessment and Testing of athletes - Design and Delivery of training courses. - One-to-one performance coaching - Team Development. - Research Team Development: The work of a sport psychologist takes the form of team building sessions where the psychologist should have to act as a facilitator. Here he improves the quality of relationships between members of the team. The success of the game depends upon the unity and harmony of the team and they should play in unison like the strings of a violin. Design and Delivery of training courses Importance of mental rehearsal, visualization or self-hypnosis, refers to some techniques often used by psychologists to help sports men visualize and mentally rehearse a particular or desired event. By using all your senses you create a very real experience of having the desired outcome. Using of Imagery Guide The first time you try imagery, it is helpful to have a skilled facilitator or practitioner walk you through the process. This is referred to as guided imagery. You can also use CDs or tapes, or record your own script to use as your guide. After you are comfortable with the technique, it is easy to practice these techniques on your own. 1. Make yourself comfortable and sit where you won't be interrupted. 2. Relax and take several long or slow breaths. 3. Close your eyes for some time and create a convincing image. Think of image which is one you have experienced previously. 4. Try Focusing on breathing if you lose the image. 5. Always maintain a positive attitude. 6. If your imagery session does not work in your initial efforts, simply open your eyes and start over with your breathing. 7.
